Despite the very best efforts of the rescue groups here in the UAE, the stray animal population is growing at an alarming rate. The exodus of people leaving the country as a result of the corona pandemic has added to this problem and although many responsible pet owners have made efforts to take their pets with them when relocating, the majority have left many heartbroken animals looking for a home behind.
The silver lining in this dark cloud are the many rescuers and shelters working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of the animals looking to be adopted. We are using this space to highlight some of the most dedicated animal shelters and rescuers in the UAE.
Based in Umm Al Quwain, Stray Dogs Center was founded in 2013 by Amirah William. Today Amirah continues to manage the shelter with the help of a paid staff of 9 caretakers, a foreman, an administrator and over 350 volunteers.
Operating entirely on donations, the team at Stray Dogs Center have rehomed thousands of dogs and continue to work hard to improve the lives of the stray animals in the country. Currently the shelter is home to 480 dogs, 15 cats and 2 donkeys.

Founded in 2010 through the generosity of His Highness, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, RAKAWC is a nonprofit animal welfare organisation that rehomes socialised, trained and healthy cats and dogs.
The shelter's main aim is to improve the welfare of animals in the UAE. They do this by finding homes for all the animals surrendered to them and by providing TNR (trap, neuter and release) as well as medical aid to the stray animal population in the UAE. Although their efforts are focused predominantly in Ras Al Khaimah, they continue to work hard for the welfare of animals all over the Emirates.

Michelle Francid who founded the Animals and Us in 2006 has been a rescuer for over 15 years. When she started the shelter in Fujairah, her main goal was to eradicate the hurt and fear inflicted on animals by humans.
The shelter rescues abandoned and stray animals, provides veterinarian assistance, helps to find homes for unwanted animals through adoption, and helps educate the public on responsible animal ownership. They operate completely on donations from the public and manage the shelter through the support of a team of volunteers armed with their love for animals.
